Independent review: Novo combines a fee-light business checking account with invoicing, expense management, budgeting tools, and more than 40 software integrations. It is an appealing package for freelancers and digitally operated small businesses, but its cash-deposit limitations and lack of interest make it less impressive for certain companies.
Novo Business Checking Review: The Quick Verdict
Novo Business Checking is best described as a digital financial command center for independent businesses. It provides the basic checking services most owners need, then adds tools for sending invoices, tracking expenses, organizing tax money, and connecting payment platforms.
The account has no monthly maintenance fee, no minimum balance requirement, and no fee for standard ACH transfers. Novo also does not charge traditional overdraft or insufficient-funds fees. That combination makes the account especially attractive to startups, freelancers, consultants, online sellers, and side hustlers who would rather spend money on marketing than on mysterious bank charges with names like “account relationship maintenance.”
However, Novo is a financial technology company rather than a bank. Deposit services are provided by Middlesex Federal Savings, F.A., an FDIC-member institution. Eligible deposits receive pass-through FDIC insurance up to the applicable legal limit, generally $250,000 per depositor for the relevant ownership category.
| Feature | Current Offering |
|---|---|
| Monthly maintenance fee | $0 |
| Minimum opening deposit | $0 |
| Minimum monthly balance | None |
| Interest earned | None |
| Standard ACH transfers | Free |
| Express ACH | 1.5%, with a $0.50 minimum and $20 maximum |
| ATM reimbursement | Up to $7 per month |
| Cash deposits | Not directly supported |
| Budgeting buckets | Up to 20 Novo Reserves |
| FDIC insurance | Up to applicable limits through partner bank |
Our rating: 4.2 out of 5. Novo earns high marks for affordability, integrations, and practical freelancer tools. It loses points for paying no interest, offering limited cash services, and relying heavily on digital customer support.
What Is Novo?
Novo Platform Inc. is a fintech company that builds business banking software around a checking account supplied by Middlesex Federal Savings. In everyday use, customers interact primarily with Novo’s mobile app and web dashboard rather than with the partner bank.
This arrangement is common among modern financial platforms. The fintech designs the interface and business tools, while the regulated bank holds deposits and provides the underlying account infrastructure. It is important to understand the distinction, particularly when investigating deposit insurance, legal agreements, transaction disputes, or account restrictions.
Novo is designed primarily for independent businesses rather than consumers. Its ideal audience includes sole proprietors, single-member LLCs, professional service firms, creative agencies, consultants, contractors, and ecommerce businesses receiving revenue electronically.
Novo Business Checking Fees
No Monthly Maintenance Fee
Novo charges no monthly maintenance fee and requires no minimum monthly balance. You can therefore keep a small balance during a slow month without watching a service fee nibble away at it like a financially ambitious hamster.
There is also no required minimum deposit amount. Transaction limits still apply, and Novo assigns certain limits according to the characteristics and history of each business account.
Free Standard ACH Transfers
Standard incoming and outgoing ACH transfers are free. Ordinary outgoing ACH payments generally take two to three business days to reach the recipient.
When speed matters, Novo offers Express ACH. The service can deliver qualifying payments on the same business day when instructions are submitted within the available processing window. Express ACH currently costs 1.5% of the transaction amount, subject to a minimum fee of $0.50 and a maximum fee of $20.
ATM Reimbursements
Novo does not operate a proprietary ATM network. Customers may use the Novo debit card at compatible ATMs, and Novo does not impose its own withdrawal fee. Third-party ATM operators may charge a surcharge, but Novo automatically reimburses eligible ATM fees up to a combined limit of $7 per month.
That is helpful for an occasional withdrawal, but it is not unlimited reimbursement. A business owner who regularly visits airport, hotel, or convenience-store ATMs could exceed the monthly allowance surprisingly quickly.
Wire Transfers
Incoming transfers are generally free. Direct outgoing domestic wire transfers are available only to selected eligible account holders, and Novo has disclosed that an outgoing domestic wire may cost up to $30. Customers who do not see the wire option can use a third-party integration such as Wise.
Novo does not directly support outgoing international wires through its standard payment menu. International payments can instead be initiated through Wise or another third-party provider, whose transfer and currency-conversion fees will apply.
Best Novo Business Checking Features
Built-In Business Invoicing
Novo lets users create, customize, send, and monitor professional invoices from the same dashboard used to manage the checking account. There is no separate subscription fee for generating ordinary invoices.
Clients can pay through supported methods such as ACH, Stripe, or Square, depending on how the invoice is configured. Third-party payment processors may charge their standard card-processing fees, but Novo’s invoicing tool can still eliminate the need for another monthly invoicing subscription.
This feature is particularly useful for consultants and freelancers. Instead of preparing an invoice in one program, emailing it from another, tracking it in a spreadsheet, and checking a separate banking app for payment, the owner can handle most of the process in one place.
Novo Reserves
Novo Reserves are virtual budgeting buckets located within the checking account. A user can create as many as 20 active Reserves for categories such as estimated taxes, payroll, equipment, emergency savings, owner compensation, or quarterly software bills.
Money can be allocated as a fixed dollar amount or as a percentage of incoming funds. For example, a freelance designer could automatically direct 25% of every client payment into a tax Reserve and 10% into an operating-cushion Reserve.
Reserves are not separate checking or savings accounts, do not have independent account numbers, and do not earn interest. They are organizational toolsvery useful organizational tools, but still not tiny savings accounts wearing name tags.
More Than 40 Business Integrations
Novo connects with more than 40 business platforms. Supported categories include accounting, ecommerce, payroll, payment processing, and international money transfers.
Notable integrations include QuickBooks, Xero, Stripe, Square, Shopify, Gusto, Wise, and other tools commonly used by small businesses. These connections can reduce manual transaction entry and make bookkeeping reconciliation less painful.
The integrations are a major reason Novo works well for internet-based businesses. A Shopify merchant can connect store activity, payment deposits, and bookkeeping data without trying to reconstruct the month from 47 browser tabs and a coffee-stained notebook.
Novo Boost
Novo Boost can make eligible incoming Stripe payouts available up to two business days earlier than the standard payout schedule. Novo does not charge a separate fee for Boost, and the service is not structured as a loan.
Faster access may be valuable to businesses with short cash-flow cycles. Receiving a client payment earlier can help cover advertising, software, supplies, or contractor expenses without using a credit card as a temporary bridge.
Physical and Virtual Debit Cards
Approved customers receive access to a virtual debit card and can request a physical Mastercard debit card. The cards can be connected to supported digital wallets, including Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay.
Virtual card access is convenient when an owner needs to start paying online expenses before the physical card arrives. It also gives users a straightforward way to lock or manage card activity from the app.
Mobile Check Deposit and Mailed Checks
Paper checks can be deposited through Novo’s mobile application. Availability may be delayed by a standard hold, and longer holds can occur when the deposit requires additional review.
Novo does not provide a traditional checkbook. Instead, users can enter a recipient and payment amount in the app, and Novo mails the physical check. Standard mailed checks may take approximately seven to ten business days to arrive, so this is better for planned bills than for a landlord who started texting yesterday.
Where Novo Business Checking Falls Short
No Direct Cash Deposits
Novo does not directly accept cash deposits. Users can convert cash into a money order and attempt to deposit that instrument through mobile check deposit, but this method adds time, cost, and inconvenience.
A consultant who receives one cash payment every six months may tolerate the workaround. A restaurant, salon, vending operator, or busy market seller probably will not. Cash-heavy businesses should consider a bank with branches, retail deposit partners, or a compatible cash-deposit network.
No Interest on Checking Balances
Novo Business Checking and Novo Reserves do not currently earn interest. This matters more as account balances grow.
A freelancer keeping $3,000 for monthly expenses may prioritize free invoicing over interest. A profitable agency holding $100,000 for payroll and taxes could sacrifice meaningful interest income by leaving the entire balance in Novo.
One practical strategy is to use Novo for operating transactions while transferring excess reserves to a separate interest-bearing business savings account. Owners should avoid moving so much that routine payments begin bouncing around like caffeinated ping-pong balls.
Limited Branch and Telephone Support
Novo has no traditional branch network. Support is centered on digital channels, including the app and online messaging. Available phone support may depend on the nature of the issue and the customer’s account access.
Independent reviewers and public complaints have repeatedly identified communication delays, check holds, transfer reviews, and limited real-time support as potential frustrations. These complaints do not prove that every customer will encounter a problem, but they deserve consideration if your business cannot tolerate delayed access or asynchronous support.
Transaction Limits Vary
Novo applies limits to ACH transfers, mobile deposits, ATM withdrawals, mailed checks, point-of-sale purchases, and other transaction types. Limits can differ by business and are displayed inside the account dashboard.
Some limits can be increased by submitting a request. Daily ATM limits and certain ACH pull limits may not be adjustable. Businesses expecting unusually large payments should review available limits before making Novo their only operating account.
Who Can Open a Novo Business Checking Account?
Applicants and business owners must generally be at least 18 years old and reside in the United States. The business must be registered or operated in the United States.
Novo requires a Social Security number, a valid U.S. residential address, an active U.S. mobile number, and an unexpired government-issued identification document. Most registered business entities must also provide an Employer Identification Number.
Required business documents depend on the entity type and state. Novo may request articles of organization, articles of incorporation, ownership information, a partnership agreement, or DBA documentation. Certain high-risk or restricted industries, including some cryptocurrency, cannabis, gambling, and financial-services businesses, may not qualify.
Who Is Novo Best For?
- Freelancers: Built-in invoicing and free ACH transfers simplify client billing.
- Consultants and agencies: Reserves help separate tax, payroll, and operating money.
- Ecommerce sellers: Shopify, Stripe, Square, and accounting integrations reduce repetitive bookkeeping.
- New LLCs: No monthly fee or minimum balance keeps overhead low during the early stages.
- Remote businesses: Owners who already operate digitally are unlikely to miss branch access.
Who Should Choose Another Account?
- Businesses that deposit cash frequently.
- Companies wanting to earn interest on operating balances.
- Owners who require branch service or consistently available telephone support.
- Businesses needing several true checking accounts with separate account numbers.
- Companies regularly sending high-value domestic or international wires.
Novo Alternatives Worth Comparing
Bluevine
Bluevine may be more attractive to owners who want an interest-bearing checking option or broader cash-deposit capabilities. Qualification requirements, rates, and deposit fees should be checked before applying.
Relay
Relay is worth considering when a company needs multiple actual checking accounts, detailed team permissions, or a more advanced cash-allocation structure. Some higher-level features require a paid subscription.
A Traditional Business Bank
Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, regional banks, and local credit unions may suit businesses that need cash deposits, certified checks, branch service, or in-person help. The tradeoff is that fee waivers often require minimum balances or qualifying activity.
The best business checking account is not necessarily the one with the longest feature list. It is the account that handles your company’s most common transactions without creating expensive or time-consuming workarounds.
Day-to-Day Novo Experiences: What Using the Account May Feel Like
The following experience-based scenarios are realistic composites illustrating how Novo’s features may work in ordinary business situations. They are not presented as personal testimony from the author.
Experience One: The Freelance Consultant
Imagine a marketing consultant who invoices six clients each month. Before using a dedicated business account, she creates invoices in a document editor, tracks payments in a spreadsheet, receives money through several apps, and transfers estimated taxes whenever she rememberswhich is usually five minutes after trying to fall asleep.
With Novo, she creates an invoice inside the dashboard and accepts an ACH payment. When the money arrives, a percentage is automatically allocated to a tax Reserve. She connects QuickBooks so the deposit and expense data flow into her accounting records.
The benefit is not that every individual feature is revolutionary. The benefit is that several small administrative steps disappear. Saving 15 minutes on an invoice may sound unimportant, but saving 15 minutes across dozens of monthly transactions can reclaim several useful working hours.
Her main frustration appears when a client pays by paper check. Mobile deposit works, but the funds are not always available immediately. She learns to avoid promising a subcontractor payment based on money that has not finished clearing.
Experience Two: The Ecommerce Seller
Consider an online merchant selling specialty home products through Shopify. Nearly all revenue arrives through card processors, so the lack of direct cash deposits barely matters.
The merchant connects Shopify, Stripe, and accounting software to Novo. Deposits become easier to identify, expenses can be categorized, and the owner can maintain separate Reserves for inventory, advertising, sales tax, and returns.
Novo Boost may provide earlier access to eligible Stripe payouts, which can help the merchant reorder a fast-selling item without waiting through the normal payout period. That extra day or two may prevent inventory from reaching zero during a busy week.
The limitation becomes obvious as the business grows. The merchant begins holding a larger cash buffer for inventory and advertising. Because Novo pays no interest, keeping the entire reserve in the checking account becomes inefficient. The owner eventually maintains Novo as the operating hub while holding long-term cash in a separate interest-bearing account.
Experience Three: The Local Service Business
Now picture a home-repair contractor who accepts cards, checks, electronic payments, and a meaningful amount of cash. Novo handles electronic invoices and card spending well, but cash becomes an unwelcome weekend project.
The contractor must purchase a money order, retain the receipt, and submit it through mobile deposit. Doing that once is manageable. Repeating it several times each week feels less like modern banking and more like an elaborate scavenger hunt.
This owner would probably be happier with a bank that accepts cash through branches or retail partners. Novo could still function as a secondary account for online payments, but it is unlikely to be the ideal primary account.
Experience Four: The Small Creative Agency
A three-person design agency receives client payments electronically and uses contractors for specialized projects. Novo’s free ACH payments, invoicing, virtual cards, and expense categorization match the agency’s workflow well.
The owner creates Reserves for payroll, contractor payments, software subscriptions, and taxes. This provides a clearer picture of what money is truly available. A $30,000 account balance looks generous until $18,000 is mentally assigned to payroll, taxes, and upcoming vendor bills.
As the team expands, however, the owner may want several independent accounts with separate routing numbers and more detailed employee card controls. At that stage, Relay or a traditional commercial bank may offer a better structure.
These scenarios reveal Novo’s central strength: it reduces administrative friction for businesses receiving and spending money digitally. They also reveal the account’s boundary. Novo is excellent when the business fits the workflow, but it is not designed to bend itself into a cash vault, high-yield treasury account, international banking platform, and full-service branch bank simultaneously.
Final Verdict: Is Novo Business Checking Worth It?
Novo Business Checking is a strong choice for freelancers, consultants, online sellers, and small service businesses that want a low-cost account with modern financial tools. The absence of a monthly fee and minimum balance makes it accessible, while invoicing, Reserves, mobile deposits, free standard ACH transfers, and extensive software integrations provide genuine everyday value.
The account is less suitable for cash-heavy companies, businesses maintaining large idle balances, and owners who place a high value on branches or immediate telephone assistance. Transaction limits and payment holds should also be reviewed before routing every dollar of company revenue into the account.
For the right digital business, Novo can replace several disconnected administrative tools and make cash flow easier to understand. For the wrong business, especially one with a cash drawer, it may turn a routine deposit into an errand involving a money order and considerably less enthusiasm.
Bottom line: Novo is one of the better fee-free business checking platforms for independent, electronically paid businesses. Use it as an operating hub, understand its limitations, and consider pairing it with an interest-bearing savings account as your cash reserves grow.
